Drinking Water Well
Objective
Guarantee safe and permanent drinking water for 800 people in Anse-à-Pitres through a community well with purification system, eliminating dependence on buying water in the Dominican Republic and the serious health risks of cholera.
In Anse-à-Pitres, 800 people line up daily at the only filtered water faucet available. When there's no clean water, families try to treat it at home with chlorine, but many don't know how to do it correctly: some children get poisoned from excess chlorine, others die from cholera from contaminated water.
Agua Mu ("My Water" in Haitian Creole) is our project to build a community well that will provide 6,088 liters of safe drinking water daily, eliminating this daily survival crisis forever.
The problem we're solving
A daily life-or-death crisis
Every morning in Anse-à-Pitres, 800 people form long lines waiting for water from the only community faucet. Mothers arrive before dawn with their containers, but when the faucet fails or there isn't enough water, families face a terrible choice:
- Buy bottled water in the Dominican Republic (economically impossible)
- Try to chlorinate contaminated water at home (with devastating results)
- Drink untreated water (mortal risk of cholera)
The results are tragic: children who die from cholera, others who suffer eye burns from excess chlorine, families who spend their few resources on medical treatments.
Our solution: A well for the entire community
Phase 1: Already underway thanks to Manos Unidas
- Well drilling: Direct access to groundwater
- Storage system: Tanks that guarantee constant reserve
- Automatic chlorination: Eliminating home dosing errors
Phase 2: If necessary ($35,000)
After analyzing the well water quality, we might need a purification plant that:
- Guarantees 100% potable water according to international standards
- Serves more families and neighboring communities
- Generates income to keep the system running
The impact we're already achieving
Current results from the community faucet
- 800 people have daily access to filtered water
- 6,088 liters of safe water distributed each day
- 50 families already trained in safe water treatment
- Drastic reduction in cholera cases in the area
What we'll achieve with the well
- Total independence: No more dependence on the Dominican Republic
- Guaranteed access: Water available 24 hours a day, every day
- Peace of mind for families: No fear of poisoning or diseases
- Family savings: No expenses on bottled water or medicines
Your support makes the difference
With your donation:
- $25/month: Guarantees drinking water for one family for a month
- $50: Covers system maintenance for one week
- $100: Trains 10 families in safe water treatment
- $500: Contributes significantly to the purification plant
Every dollar donated is a glass of clean water that saves a life. Every sponsor is a family that will never again have to choose between safe water or food.
In Anse-à-Pitres, water isn't just a basic necessity: it's the difference between life and death. Your support turns this difference into hope.
